Equine epigenetics — Ocala, Florida

Beyond the bloodline.

Pedigree tells you what your horse was born with. EpiEquine shows you what's happening now — and then we act on it. One hair sample, analyzed in our Ocala laboratory, becomes a custom powder formula blended for your horse alone.

The science

Genetics is the blueprint. Epigenetics is the living record.

Every cell in your horse carries the same DNA — but not every gene is switched on. Chemical marks on the DNA, principally methylation, turn genes up and down in response to what the horse actually experiences: age, nutrition, workload, recovery, stress, environment.

These marks can be read from a hair follicle. They change over time. And because they change, they can be tracked — and influenced.

Epigenetic age models for horses are established in peer-reviewed research, including studies published in Nature Communications and Communications Biology.

A genetic test reads

What your horse was born with

Inherited traits and risks, fixed at conception — coat color, carrier status, breed markers. Worth knowing. Worth knowing once.

An epigenetic test reads

What your horse is doing now

How those genes are behaving today, shaped by age and management. A baseline you can act on — and measure against, season after season.

The profile

One sample. A clear picture.

Your EpiEquine profile is written for horsemen, not geneticists — and reviewed with you, line by line.

  • 01

    Epigenetic age

How fast your horse is aging relative to the calendar — the single most telling number in the report.

  • 02

    Training load & recovery

Whether the current program is building your horse up — or quietly wearing it down.

  • 03

    Nutrition & metabolic signals

How the feed program is landing at the cellular level, before it shows in body condition.

  • 04

    Stress & environment

The molecular footprint of travel, turnout, herd changes, and the show calendar.

  • 05

    Baseline & tracking

Re-test to measure what a change in management actually did.

  • 06

    Your custom formula

Everything in the profile feeds a powder formula blended for your horse. See the Formula

The EpiEquine Formula

A formula for one horse. Yours.

Your horse's profile doesn't end in a report. We translate it into a custom supplement — a fine powder blended for your horse alone, built around what the profile shows: recovery, metabolic balance, stress load, healthy aging. As your horse changes, the formula changes with it.

Formulas are nutritional supplements; they are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. We're glad to review your horse's formula with your veterinarian.

The laboratory

Independent. Ocala-based. Horses only.

EpiEquine was founded in the Horse Capital of the World for one reason: the best horses in the country deserve a laboratory that works exclusively for them. We don't test dogs, cattle, or people. We don't ship your samples out of state. And we don't share your results with anyone you haven't named.

  • Chain-of-custody, barn to benchEvery sample is sealed at collection and tracked through analysis.
  • Your samples never leave Marion CountyCollected here, analyzed here, reviewed with you here.
  • Discretion, as standardResults go to you — and to the trainer, veterinarian, or agent you designate. No one else.

Questions

Asked, and answered.

Is the collection safe and painless?

Yes. We pull thirty to fifty hairs from the mane or tail with the root attached — the same method registries use for DNA parentage testing. No needles, no sedation, no vet visit.

What is the EpiEquine Formula?

A custom supplement in powder form, blended for one horse based on its epigenetic profile. It's fed daily over your horse's regular ration, and we adjust the blend each time you re-test.

Will the formula work with my current feed and supplements?

Tell us everything your horse receives today — feed, supplements, and medications. We formulate around the full program and are happy to coordinate with your veterinarian or nutritionist.

Does this replace veterinary care?

No. EpiEquine provides informational insight into your horse's biology and nutritional support built from it. It complements — and never replaces — your veterinarian's diagnosis and care. We're glad to share your report and formula with your vet at your request.

How is this different from a genetic test?

A genetic test reads inherited DNA that never changes. An epigenetic test reads the chemical marks that regulate that DNA — and those shift with age, nutrition, training, and stress. One tells you what your horse was born with; the other tells you what's happening now.

How long until I have results?

We confirm current turnaround when you book. When your profile is ready, we schedule a personal review rather than emailing a PDF and leaving you to it.

Which horses qualify?

Any breed, any discipline, any age with enough mane or tail to sample.

Should I re-test?

We recommend it. A baseline followed by periodic re-testing is the clearest way to see whether the formula and any changes in feed, workload, or management are working — and it's how we refine the blend.

Where do you collect?

At your barn anywhere in Ocala and Marion County, or by drop-off at our laboratory: 3309 SW 34th Circle, Suite 103, Ocala, FL 34474 — Monday–Friday, 10am–5pm, by appointment. Outside the county, ask us.

What does it cost?

Profiles, formulas, and pricing are set at consultation, based on the number of horses and the program you want. Request a consultation and we'll put it in writing.
